What's remarkable about the combat system is not just how well it handles fencing, but also unarmed combat and firearms as well. Most wounds aren't deadly - character is more likely to end up hors de combat due to unconsciousness - but it is possible to stick your sword in someone's eye and kill them outright. The fencing system takes into account character expertise, fencing style, and player tactics - players actively choose attacks and defenses, from slashing and thrusting to sidestepping and ducking to parrying and countering to blocking a blow with a table leg and kicking someone in the junk. Some of these are pretty rare or expensive and there may be newer games that do the same kind of things that cost less. This also comes complete with tall ships miniatures rules and simple cardstock counters you can cut out.
